Who pays for home care? Is there funding available?

The fastest growing segment of home care is private pay home care, where clients and families choose to use their personal financial resources to provide the peace of mind, quality of life, and independence that comes with staying at home rather than moving to a care facility. If you have purchased long-term care insurance, you should contact your agent to see what services are covered.

There are several subsidy programs.

  • Generally speaking, personal care or companion services are not covered by insurance or Medicare. However Medicare may pay for follow-up skilled care services for those who are homebound following hospitalization or rehabilitation.
  • Medicaid may pay for home care services as an alternative to assisted living for those that are in financial need and meet certain asset and income tests.
  • If you are a veteran or surviving spouse of a veteran, you may qualify for aid and attendance. Click Here to find out more.
